This is where you are currently. Amongst the six realms of existence, the human realm is considered the most favourable for reaching enlightenment. This is because it is a realm of conscious decision-making rather than solely experiencing the rewards of past karma like in the other five realms. It allows you to experience both joy and suffering within the same lifetime, which offers unique opportunities for self-awareness and practicing the Buddhist Dharma to break free from Samsara and achieve nirvana.
Buddhists consider everything to be impermanent and cyclical, including the world and planes of existence that we live in. It is said that the current cycle is the fifth and there is a buddha in every cycle of existence. What remains constant is that although a bodhisattva may experience countless other realms of existence, they always reach enlightenment in the human realm. Hence, in terms of spiritual progress, the human realm is considered sacred and above the rest of the five realms, despite the devas and asuras living longer, more pleasurable lives than humans.
In the deva realms and asura realms, the celestial beings live for eons and even when they die, they do not experience the process of ageing. In the human realm, we experience the unavoidable sufferings of birth, ageing, sickness and death and through this, can see the dukkha (suffering) that is within the samsara more clearly than any other realm.
Rebirth as a human is regarded as the result of positive karma in previous lives, and living as a human provides infinitely more opportunities than other realms to cultivate good karma.
